OK: my take on this is that you're listening to the wrong Jewish theology on this point. You and I have some very similar issues with Yom Kippur. I would recommend this for starters:

This was very thought-provoking. Although I don't identify as religious, at this point, I was raised a Protestant among Jews, and reading this post, I realized how much I've since been influenced by the Catholics that I both study and live near, and how much I need to unravel some of all those influences. The link Servetus posted was just what I needed to hear today. Thank you both.
