I agree completely, and I would LOVE to hear more about which pieces you chose--the Whitman I'm assuming is "I Hear America Singing," but I'd love to hear the other to do something similar with my 9s@

Jackie -- The Whitman I gave them was both "I Hear America Singing" and an excerpt from "There Was a Child Went Forth." What I decided to use for the exam is the first paragraphs of Silent Spring, from the opening section called "A Fable for Tomorrow." Super accessible! By the way, I think you'd love the June Jordan poem we read: "What Great Grief Has Made the Empress Mute."
