But this week it occurred to me that perhaps this tendency to volunteer for things, to join committees and take on tasks, is a gendered phenomenon, another way of being a "good girl," not by being quiet and docile and those other things that I'm not, but by being helpful and useful and thus well-loved.

Bingo! You are so right and we do this SO often. I'm consciously stepping back from commitments this year and it's very hard, emotionally, to disengage from some groups.
