I agree that putting your name in can only be good. Be prepared for rejection, yes. I have been rejected and it does hurt, even in the kindest cases. But knowing what you know, I think it's worth putting your name in there. Maybe if not for this opening at this point, but for another situation in the future, it will work out.

And if they want you for this and it turns out to be fun, so much the better!

Absolutely go for it! As you note, the worst case scenario is that you still have a job you find plenty rewarding. And the best case scenario is that you get to try something new; test the waters as it were.

So go for it. And good luck!
