A student has just informed me in her final exam that Charlotte Temple (from the 18th-century novel of the same name) dies "due to pregnancy during birth." Pregnancy during birth? What are the chances?
(I'm not being snarky, really, and I gave the student full points on the question because Charlotte Temple does in fact die of complications resulting from childbirth, and that wasn't even the point of the question anyway. I just thought it was funny.)
Reported to me by a nonblogging medievalist:
Final-exam question: Where were Chaucer's travelers going?
Answer: They were on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
I shit you not.
