My impression about Talmud, fwiw, is that at some point people who are curious either get serious (i.e., they learn enough Hebrew / Aramaic to really do it), or they sort of grasp a version of the general outlines of "Talmudic thinking" and that's enough for them. (I'm in the latter group, which is weird, b/c usually I want to learn a topic from the fundamentals onward, but Talmud is such a deep sea that the overview has been enough for me.) So why not get started and see where it really goes? It will be a long time before you have this kind of opportunity again.

Other than getting sick, it sounds like you're doing sabbatical pretty much exactly right! I love hearing about what you're learning!
