... because when I sleep 10-12 hours for a few days in a row, I then start having trouble sleeping because my mind starts running overtime when I lie down. This is ridiculous, but I actually had to take a sleeping pill for the last two nights in a row. I'm sure that being snowed in for those two days contributed to my bad sleeping, but things definitely needed to change today!
I had two goals for the day: (1) get some shit done so that there's less on my mind, and (2) wear myself out physically so that I'm tired when I go to bed. I've definitely accomplished (2), because I went to the gym, did some last shoveling, did two loads of laundry, and ran errands; it's not even 7:00 pm, and I'm yawning. So hurrah on that score. And I did get some department stuff done -- mostly writing emails, which is a disturbingly large part of my being department chair -- but I'm really going to have to settle in tomorrow to get my classes planned for January.
In other news, I've lost two pounds thus far in 2014! So that's a good start on my weight-loss and renewed health goal.
Plus, I realized last week that I'd totally forgotten to give a gift to the faculty secretary in December, which the English department does annually. I therefore decided I needed to step up the level of the usual gift (often a plant or something along those lines) to make up for my lack of timeliness, so I'm knitting her a scarf for a New Year's gift. So I now have given myself yet another deadline for the start of school.
Of course, during all of this time that I have been proving myself not cat-like, our actual cats have been covering the house's feline duties quite well. They've been so happy to have us both home nonstop for a week, and it will be somewhat wrenching to leave this house of snuggliness to go back out into the cold workaday world. At the same time, I can only handle so much unstructured time before I go a little nuts. I'm not at the nuts level now by a long shot, but I do recognize this about myself and will try to bear it in mind when the alarm goes off at 5:45 next week!
